Carmen had previous stops with The Draft Network and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. She spent six seasons with the Bucs, including 2020, which added the title of Super Bowl Champion (and boat-parade participant) to her résumé. It's what makes the Packers such a dangerous team across multiple positions. Despite being the youngest team in the league last year, Green Bay housed the Dallas Cowboys at their place and cruised to the divisional round of the playoffs. That was helped by the fact that it's hard to prepare for an offense with a seemingly endless supply of young weapons, as an example. If it's not Romeo Doubs or Jayden Reed getting into the end zone, it's Tucker Kraft or Bo Melton.

Lovely Lavender Medley™

There's just no way to account for every single player on the field when Green Bay can rotate them in and out faster than defenses can keep up and get production out of all of them. With the NFL Draft now over for the Green Bay Packers, head coach Matt LaFleur recently gave an update on one of his young players. As they get prepared for their offseason activities, expectations are certainly higher than they were at the start of last season. We continuously explore new horizons through innovation to maintain our leadership position in the production of premium ice creams and desserts. We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours. Effective online reputation management strategy not only fosters trust among existing patients but also establishes you as the top choice for potential ones.

Love Is In The Air

Our goal is to provide a peaceful and tranquil environment where you can leave your worries behind and focus on yourself. They already signed former New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney to a four-year, $68 million contract last month. I say all this to set up how we should be viewing this year's draft class, where the Packers covered every need they had, often multiple times over. Green Bay is undergoing a defensive overhaul under new coordinator Jeff Hafley, who will have the Packers running a base 4-3 defense for the first time in 15 years. Green Bay has an incredible knack for getting production out of their draft classes, up to and almost especially players drafted in the later rounds.

Stokes played very well as a rookie, but we will have to see how he can perform after missing so much time due to injury. If Stokes can be healthy for the Packers, he and Alexander have the potential to be a very strong cornerback duo in the league. With the NFL so passing prevalent, having a strong secondary has become more and more important. After a great first season post-Aaron Rodgers, the Packers are looking to move full steam ahead and be a playoff contender once again this coming season.

Services

Our team of highly trained and experienced professionals is dedicated to providing the best possible service to our clients. From our skilled massage therapists to our knowledgeable estheticians, we are constantly striving to improve our skills and stay up-to-date on the latest techniques and trends in the industry. The Packers also believe Morgan could play either guard or tackle spot. LaFleur said Morgan will work first at left tackle, the position he played at Arizona. Monk’s 58 career starts at Duke included 34 at right guard, 12 at right tackle and 12 at center. Glover had multiple starts at left tackle, left guard and right tackle.

Morgan joins quarterback Jordan Love — taken 26th overall in 2020 — as the only first-round picks the Packers have used on offensive players in the last 13 drafts. "Just the physicality these guys showed on tape," head coach Matt LaFleur said of the defensive players added in the draft. Green Bay wasn’t as aggressive in targeting pass rushers or cornerbacks. The Packers didn’t draft any defensive linemen, and the only cornerback they took Kalen King of Penn State in the seventh round (255th). The point is, Green Bay is very intentional with their draft classes because they intend to get production out of the whole thing, whether that's in the form of actual play time or as quality depth. As a 2021 first-round pick, Stokes has some high expectations heading into the 2024 season.

Timeless Elegance™ Bouquet

If you would like to send flowers outside of our service areas, we will be sure to send your order to a fulfilling florist. Monk and Glover will try to continue the Packers’ history of finding quality offensive linemen on the final day of the draft. The list includes David Bakhtiari (2013, fourth found), Corey Linsley (2014, fifth), Jon Runyan Jr. (2020, sixth), Zach Tom (2022, fourth) and Rasheed Walker (2022, seventh). After departing from their usual strategy by taking an offensive player in the first round, the Packers focused on defense with five of their next seven picks in the NFL draft that concluded Saturday. The Packers are switching from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 scheme under new coordinator Jeff Hafley, the former Boston College coach who took over for the fired Joe Barry. There's a very real possibility we see Oladapo firmly in a safety rotation or used in certain DB-heavy packages.

Recently, LaFleur spoke about how the rehabbing of cornerback Eric Stokes is going so far this offseason. To offer you high-quality products and ensure compliance with regulations and our procedures, we have developed a strict quality policy. Today, our products are designed and manufactured in our factory in Hesdin-l’Abbé, located in the north of France, before being sold in almost 18 countries. At La Fleur Spa, we believe that the environment plays a crucial role in the spa experience. That's why we have carefully designed our facilities to provide a peaceful and serene atmosphere. From our comfortable waiting area to our private treatment rooms, every detail has been considered to ensure your comfort and relaxation.

Our florists at Fleur D'amour would love to collaborate with you on a unique design! The fact that Green Bay spent their first pick of the draft on offense should mean they have a lot of faith in offensive tackle Jordan Morgan, too. The Packers have used their first pick of the draft on a defensive player 11 out of the last 12 years, save for in 2020 when they took their current franchise quarterback.

la fleur charlotte

With a great cornerback in Jaire Alexander already on the roster, the Packers need to make sure they have a good starter opposite of him if teams choose to avoid throwing at Alexander. Our production is done according to “règles de l’art” of great French pastry. We develop our recipes with passion in our workshop in Hesdin-l’Abbé, in the north of France and select our ingredients with care and rigor to offer you tasty and authentic desserts. More than 200 people, including many highly qualified pastry chefs, work at La Charlotte. At La Fleur Spa, we believe that self-care is essential to living a happy, healthy life. That's why we offer a variety of spa services designed to help you relax, rejuvenate, and unwind.

From plane to automobile to bus, there are a variety of transportation options for traveling between the two cities, depending on budget, preference, and time constraints. Hilton Head is a resort town and boot-shaped barrier island located in South Carolina’s Lowcountry 20 miles northeast of Savannah, Georgia (Hilton Head’s shoe shape has the toe pointing south towards the Savannah River). The southern-most Brunswick Islands beach is Sunset Beach, which is considered to be one of the closet beaches to Charlotte, NC in terms of driving time. Directly west of Sunset Beach is Bird Island (they share the same barrier island and you can walk to Bird Island from Sunset Beach), a protected beach and one of 10 sites that make up the North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve. The beach is a popular tourist destination located in the middle of a 60 mile stretch of beach known as The Grand Strand in northeastern South Carolina.

Charlotte's craft breweries, art museums, public parks, recreational activities, and varied neighborhoods make it a year-round destination, with over 50 million visitors annually. Compared to most of the country, the weather is tolerable 12 months out of the year. That said, the best time to visit the city is in the spring when the flowers are in full bloom, the patios are open, Triple-A baseball is in full swing, and you can take advantage of recreational activities in and outside of town. Fall is also a great time to visit the city, with parks in all their splendor, ideal temperatures, fewer crowds, plenty of outdoor festivals, and options for short getaways to the nearby mountains. This is a relatively short flight in a private plane, but you might be planning to book a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need toinclude how many minutes to get to your local airport, waitfor security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the otherairport, and get to your destination.

25 spots for seafood, soul food classics, and some of the best BBQ you’ll ever eat. It had us at “cheese cloud,” a fluffy pile of fluffy Parmesan or pecorino that customers can add to pasta for $3. Restaurant power couple Jeff Tonidandel and Jamie Brown always pay attention to the details, and their foray into Italy is no different. The menu of six or so housemade pastas and sharing-size entrees like branzino is rounded out with small plates (toasted hazelnuts and the whole fried artichoke are standouts) that you can keep all to yourself.

NORTH END

Familiar names have pushed into new territory, adding new favorites to the culinary landscape, while new names are rising up to get attention too. North Carolina’s largest city, which sprawls from Lake Norman down to the South Carolina border, can be a hard city for outsiders and newcomers to get their arms around. Really, it’s a city of neighborhoods, with a lot of once-overlooked areas, like West Charlotte, finally challenging the busy Uptown as the place to find everything from regional classics to modern global trends. In a city of tastemakers, chefs, mixologists and brewers work daily to move Charlotte’s gastronomical needle forward. It’s in the dishes and drinks that you’ll find the Queen City's incomparable flavor. Warm and festive, Vida is an easygoing (and spicy) stop before a night out Uptown.

MADISON PARK

Easy-going and family-friendly, this hot dog joint has a longstanding devotion to Sahlen’s smokehouse hot dogs and sausages, as well as to handcrafting its own pickles, onion rings and chili. Try the JJ’s No. 1 Red Hot with chile relish, diced onions, mustard, and a dill pickle spear (with the option to deviate with a turkey, veggie, or all-beef dog). Enter this lighthearted, hipster establishment when searching for a craft beer, bottle of wine, sandwich, or salad (there are plenty of snack-ish items like potato chips and kale chips to pair with either). The second location of its kind, Rhino Uptown is also known for its locally sourced goods (like kombuchas and coffees) and baked items (reach for a cookie).

This uptown restaurant is just swanky enough, with black leather seats and faux cherry blossom branches hanging from the ceiling. T Breakfast, which turns the table into a breakfast buffet of fried chicken, bacon, eggs, donuts, biscuits, and jams. Highly sought-after food truck El Veneno has a permanent setup at Birdsong Brewing for Sunday brunch. The breakfast tacos are unlike any other, with scorched, spiced meats hugged by corn tortillas. Two killer breakfast options include the soft conchas enveloping barbacoa cheese, creamy avocado, and scrambled eggs, and the specialty sourdough jalapeno bagels with fried eggs, queso, and bacon.

And the place is worth the trip alone for Botiwalla, a creation of Asheville's Meherwan Irani that offers Indian street food like vada pav and kale pakoras. Helmed by the esteemed 5th Street Group, La Belle Helene adds a bit of French class to Uptown Charlotte. The menu covers the Parisian classics—French onion soup, ratatouille, saffron mussels, duck a l'orange for two, beef Bourguignon and a honeycomb creme brûlée—and there’s also special menus mid-day and for brunch. The Economy Gastronomy special serves up a three-course menu for $59 per person and includes stars like a foie gras torchon and crispy duck confit. You know that last day of a bachelorette party, when everyone’s a smidge hungover? You’re going to need a solid breakfast, but you also gotta get those last cute pics before you crawl back to reality.

All-day breakfast is another defining factor of the eatery—omelets, breakfast burritos, eggs Benedict, and chicken and waffles are a solid start to any morning. A “best restaurant” label doesn’t necessarily mean sky-high prices; in fact, Brooks’ Sandwich House—where cash is the only accepted form of payment—serves $4 hot dogs and $8-a-pound beef chili. The nearly 50-year-old, family-run roadside stop recommends getting your cheeseburger made “all the way,” which includes mustard, onions, and the house made beef chili. Since 1998, Mert’s Heart and Soul has given Charlotteans the gift of soul food—and a national audience got a peek at the restaurant on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in 2015. Menu standouts include the Soul Roll (egg roll wraps with black-eyed peas, rice, collard greens, and diced chicken), the mini loaves of cornbread, and the fresh salmon cakes.

Good Food on MontfordArrow

Tucked into an old pharmacy building near Eastway Drive, it’s got an eclectic vibe with flea market funkiness and a menu of homey classics, like fried chicken drizzled with honey and pecans or pimento cheese fritters, plus a weekend brunch. The wine selection is a surprise, and there’s a full bar in case customers want something harder. Uptown workers always need a good business lunch spot in their pocket (especially if the tab is coming from the boss’s pocket).

James Beard semifinalist Chef Greg Collier and his wife and business partner, Subrina Collier, however, have managed to solve this riddle at Leah & Louise. Billed as a juke joint with ties to the Mississippi River Valley foodways, the restaurant introduces its customers to menu items that combine the familiar in order to create the nuance of taste. For years, the Queen City has steadily marched toward becoming a top food city in the South—with recent nods from the James Beard Foundation validating its expertise and growth. While barbecue and typical Southern fare can certainly be found within Charlotte’s city limits (check out Sweet Lew’s BBQ or Noble Smoke), the culinary landscape is more so defined by its creativity and variety in cuisine. In fact, when your options are this vast, the only issue is choosing where to go—so we did the work for you. Taqueria Mal Pan’s tortillas make it stand out from other Mexican spots in town.

Read on for our picks for the best restaurants in Charlotte, and start planning ahead. Even though Charlotte isn’t a coastal city, it’s only 175 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Because restaurants here have prime access to fresh, local, and sustainable seafood. The large restaurant gets busy and chatty, but that won’t keep other people from staring in envy as a waiter passes by with your seafood skyscraper.

The grab-and-go grocery and freezer sections are heavy on high-end snacks and a few cooking ingredients. There’s a parking deck right behind it, but it doesn’t validate parking (yet), so add $5 to your bill unless you live within walking distance. This snug ramen shop overlooking the Charlotte Rail Trail in South End features deep bowls of steaming ramen ranging from vegan to pork belly. Start with the shishito peppers and the crispy fried Brussels sprouts with light bonito flakes, and end with the soft serve ice cream of the day — miso ginger is the latest.

The next time you’re brewery-hopping in South End, shopping for art in NoDa, taking a walking tour of the historic homes in Dilworth, or hitting the museums in Uptown, use this guide to find all the best places to eat in Charlotte.

In his spot within the Mint Museum Uptown, Executive Chef Jonathan Moore plates dishes as pretty as the art on the walls nearby. The menu takes on dishes from across the globe, like Pulled Duck Arepas, Pork Belly Bulgogi lettuce wraps and a Gullah Paella from right here on the Carolina coast. There’s a walk-up window for those in a hurry and a little outdoor seating, but there’s usually no trouble finding a seat inside the Good Wurst. You can’t go wrong with a menu that stretches from bagels to Reubens to a deep pocket of “wursts” — dogs and brats.

Currywurst frites have a following, but for the money, Reuben fries with crunchy pastrami bits are too good to be missed. The restaurant has also added packaged meats, like its pastrami, in the deli case. To highlight our ever-evolving food scene, we have compiled a list of 101 must-try restaurants in and around Charlotte. Fondly called Al Mike’s by locals, this Charlotte staple that opened in 1983 offers a low-key tavern experience with unpretentious food. It’s impossible to go wrong with the quinoa black bean vegetable burger or the reuben on rye (get a basket of Cajun fries, too).

The experience isn’t cheap — $175 for 10-course menus and $235 for 14 courses (most courses have more than one item, pushing the number of creations to as high as 50 bits and bites), and wine pairings can add $100 to $300. But it’s regularly selling out, proving that Charlotte eaters are willing to go all in on an experience. Owner Dan Nguyen and her family-run Vietnamese restaurant are so beloved in Charlotte that regulars started a fundraising campaign to keep the place open through the pandemic. The menu at lunch and dinner still has more than 130 items, and Nguyen still uncannily remembers what customers like when they come back. Try banh xeo, a classic curry-yellow pancake filled with shrimp; com chien thom, pineapple fried rice served in a hollowed-out pineapple half;  or the crispy quail, served with a little dish of salt and black pepper with lemon. Is there anything more satisfying than picking up a dense, build-your-own-salad-bowl to-go on a work day for under $15?

Gonzales-Mora’s Noche Bruta is a new Camp North End gem, taking over Hex’s sweeping space Thursday through Saturday evenings for a slightly fancier sit-down service. At reasonable prices, the hyper-limited menu still gets to a bit of everything — the flautas drenched in a salsa verde, the ribeye tacos, and a can’t-miss miso caramel churro. The crispy pork katsu sandwich marries Japanese, Hawaiian, and Mexican flavors between pillowy shokupan. Is there a regional cuisine that restaurateur Frank Scibelli hasn’t put his finger in?

Watch out thought because this airline, like a few others, will try to nickel and dime you. Seats are way too snug for my hip to knee ratio and the recline on the seat in front of me made my experience worst. Not a plane for people 6 ft or over unless you fly first class. Can you train older dogs, or is it only for puppies?

Training can boost your dog’s confidence and help address behavior issues you are experiencing. We base our training around the "Classical Conditioning" model (a.k.a. "Pavlovian" or "respondent conditioning"). This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form (after proper conditioning), when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter.

We use negative reinforcement to strengthen the commands and gentle corrections to prevent unwanted behaviors. Their foundational dog training program includes e-collar training. It also comes with a variety of supplies, such as a tactical dog collar with a little handle on it (like I use with Blanco and love!), a leash, ecollar, and more. These are two features you don’t find in most dog training programs.

Know Before You Go: Charlotte FC vs Columbus Crew March 23 at 7:30PM

columbus crew charlotte fc

This year, construction on the Crew’s new state-of-art stadium was completed, the last piece marking the start of a new era for the club. "The idea is to have a progression," Nancy said. Striker Cucho Hernandez returned to full training with the Crew on Tuesday, as he recovers from a knee injury that has caused him to miss the last five games, so his return is drawing closer, but may not come quite yet. Hernandez is listed as questionable on the Crew's injury report for Saturday. "I think just being able to put together a complete performance, where you’re in control of the possession and the tempo and every aspect of the game is something we strive for." Yaw Yeboah (Columbus Crew) left footed shot from the left side of the box misses to the left.

One Club Episode 1 What does 'One Club' mean?

Brandon Cambridge (Charlotte FC) right footed shot from the right side of the box is blocked. "Steven is really important for us in terms of yes, his quality, but also the way he’s able to give confidence to his teammates," Nancy said. "I was not happy with the quality of the game. The quality of the game was not a good game. But the spirit and the desire to compete until the end and to stay calm when the environment is not easy, I was really, really pleased to see that."

Match Overview

The Crew won, 4-2, in the last meeting on June 3, 2023, at Lower.com Field. Christian Ramirez opened the scoring in the fifth minute before adding a second just before the hour mark. Between those two goals, Max Arfsten and Cucho Hernández also added tallies to the scoreboard. Charlotte won the last meeting at Bank of America Stadium, 1-0, on Apr. 22, 2023. The Crew's first Concacaf Champions Cup game will be on the road March 6.

In that way, Wednesday's game was also a breakthrough moment. Beating the Rapids at home doesn't look overly impressive on paper. The Rapids, after all, entered Wednesday's game in 13th place of 14 teams in the Western Conference.

Yet Monterrey struck first at Estadio BBVA, courtesy of a Yevhen Cheberko own goal (11') after Maxi Meza's chip over onrushing Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte caromed off the crossbar and in off the Ukrainian defender. But Columbus leveled on the final kick of the first half when Aidan Morris (45+4') picked off a restart by Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada and fired home the Crew’s first of three away goals. But when the Crew are struggling to generate offense, midfielder Lucas Zelarayán often shoulders the sole responsibility of getting his team going. As one of the best attacking midfielders in MLS, Zelarayán certainly has the ability and freedom to take control of the Crew's attack, but Nancy's offensive structure is more effective when a variety of players are sharing the ball. The Crew are intent on approaching each game the same way, so the plan won't change on the road in front of a big crowd at Bank of America Stadium.

2 – So far, so good for the Black & Gold, who sit second in the Eastern Conference with 10 points from the first four matches. Inter Miami CF is tied on points – but has played an extra game. The Crew have continued their liquid soccer from last season, playing above, around and through opponents. Columbus battered a strong New York Red Bulls side, 3-0, last weekend, and hopes to carry that momentum on the road in North Carolina.

Unbeaten across all competitions to start 2024, the Columbus Crew return to the road Saturday night when they face Eastern Conference foe Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium. Season Ticket Members and ticket-holders can donate ticket(s) if they can't make the match for a veteran, active military member, or any family members to attend. All entry to Bank of America events require mobile tickets.

It should be noted that this is the first time the Crew have had a full week to prepare for a road opponent since entering Matchday 2 at Minnesota United FC on March 2. With more time to prepare – and recover – it’ll be interesting to see head coach Wilfried Nancy’s starting lineup. Zelarayan, who had been named the 2020 MLS Newcomer of the Year, registered two goals and one assist against Seattle Sounders FC 3-0, also securing 2020 MLS Cup MVP honors.

Zawadzki's late header salvaged a point, but Nancy wasn't pleased with his team's performance in the game as a whole. Max Arfsten (Columbus Crew) left footed shot from the right side of the box to the bottom left corner. Justin Meram (Charlotte FC) left footed shot from the centre of the box to the centre of the goal. Kerwin Vargas (Charlotte FC) left footed shot from outside the box is high and wide to the left.

Assisted by Lucas Zelarayán with a cross. Cucho Hernández (Columbus Crew) right footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner. Assisted by Lucas Zelarayán with a through ball.

Rather than play the ball off the bounce, which would have given Kahlina an opportunity to intercept it before Hernandez could touch it, Hernandez stuck out his foot to lob it over Kahlina's head. "I’m really pleased, first of all, with the intensity of the game," Crew coach Wilfried Nancy said. "The first half was really good. The second half also good. Not — we conceded these goals, but I really liked the intensity, knowing that we played Wednesday, knowing that this is the last game of this stretch."

columbus crew charlotte fc

The Crew regained control of the game from there, and while Charlotte kept the pressure on when they were able, the Crew's control of the ball prevented Charlotte from generating many dangerous looks. On the pitch, the team's first trophy came in 2002, when the Black & Gold won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Crew's first MLS Cup trophy came in 2008 with the team also securing the Supporters' Shield that season led by Argentine midfielder Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The midfielder won the league's MVP award in 2008, and he wrapped things up that season by assisting on all three of the Crew's goals in their victory over the New York Red Bulls in the MLS Cup final.

The Eight Mountains Review: A Bond Forged Amid Splendor The New York Times

charlotte vandermeersch

Felix, do you see that approach to music as similar to your other films? I always think about your use of “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof in Beautiful Boy, which at first had me skeptical but eventually won me over with its sincerity. Since you mentioned the music, how did you settle on your approach to using it in the film? There’s a real earnestness to the way it accompanies the action you depict, especially in montage, where so many filmmakers can use it as ironic or removed commentary on the action. Felix Van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch enter a new stage of their partnership, both professional and personal, through their co-direction of The Eight Mountains.

‘Past Lives’ 8. ‘The Eight Mountains’

The actors bring all the intelligence such heart-rending delicacy requires, too, as cinematographer Gábor Marosi foregrounds their faces in flatly lighted widescreen images evocative of a dimly lighted existence. With deep, melancholy eyes you can imagine inspiring a painter, Hajduk keeps Aldó’s sorrow ever-present, even in the hint of a smile; the way his worry for “Sunny” (Klára’s nickname) becomes a quiet engine in the film is a low-key master’s class. ” I’ve just logged in to Zoom to talk to Belgian directors Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch, and they’re laughing already. ” says Vandermeersch I flap around, fiddling with my webcam, but nothing will correct the me-shaped smear on the screen.

‘All of Us Strangers’ 2. ‘The Boy and the Heron’

The Belgian directing duo discuss how how they translated Paolo Coginetti’s novel into cinematic terms, their approach to music, and more.

Amy Vermillion shares with us a glimpse into her favorite room design, along with how this primary bathroom was inspired and came together with gorgeous customized details. For her, going with the classics means that the spaces she works on will not only be simply stunning, but they’ll remain timeless as well. In addition, she’s genuinely passionate about what she does, and Anne always ensures to tastefully reflect her client’s personalities and wishes in their space. One day, Lara calls Pietro and tells him that a snowstorm buried the house and Bruno is nowhere to be found, possibly dead. When the snow starts to thaw, birds are seen scavenging on something partially buried in the snow, presumably Bruno. (This is related to an earlier discussion of the Nepalese “sky burial” ritual, where the deceased are left on the mountains for animals to consume).

Pietro’s father’s death reunites the two in realizing his dream of constructing a cabin on the Alps, and the project and subsequent explorations of the awe-inspiring mountain range bond Pietro and Bruno in a shared purpose. Yet despite their connection, the purity of nature and the demands of society both threaten to drive the men to pursue different, possibly irrevocably divergent paths on the vertiginous terrain of life. The mountains in "The Eight Mountains" are the Italian Alps and the Himalayas, equally beautiful, equally intimidating, and dazzling. They are seen with the eyes of two men who know them very well, feel comfortable climbing up and down the steep slopes, and have absorbed mountain life's challenges and joys. Directed by Belgian filmmakers Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix van Groeningen, "The Eight Mountains" works slowly and patiently. This may be frustrating for some viewers, but the film works because of its slowness and patience, not despite it.

Vandermeersch, primarily known for her work as an actress, had previously appeared in several of her husband’s other movies and received a screenplay collaboration credit on his Oscar-nominated The Broken Circle Breakdown. But as Van Groeningen began to approach shooting the adaptation of Paolo Coginetti’s novel that he’d co-written with his wife during pandemic lockdowns, he suggested that she join him in helming the film. Based on the award-winning Italian bestseller “Le Otto Montagne” by Paolo Cognetti, the movie is novelistic in the best sense. It immerses you in the world of its characters – both human and Alpine – on that chimingly deep level that usually only literature can access. But it lives and breathes in beautifully cinematic terms, with each one of Ruben Impens’ stunning academy-ratio pictures worth a thousand words. Although this classic bildungsroman may have been nipped and tucked in the transition from page to screen, in terms of scale and sweep and emotion, little appears to have been lost in translation.

Peerspace appreciates Charlotte interior designers

The story begins in the summer of 1984, when 11-year-old Pietro and his parents, who live in Turin, spend the summer in a small Alpine village. It’s here that Pietro meets Bruno, a boy roughly the same age, who swiftly becomes his friend and guide. The region, with its scenic lakes and jaw-dropping vistas, is a boundless sun-drenched playground. And the writer-directors Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch joyously capture the boys’ rambunctious, rough-and-tumble innocence, the pure happiness we see coursing through their faces and bodies as they run, wrestle, yell and explore.

charlotte vandermeersch

The precise nature of the men’s disquiet remains blurry, almost as if no one has ever seen an Antonioni film, though there are suggestions that the world beyond the valley — with its dirty air and noisy streets, its violence and politics — is a prime suspect. Yet even when that outside world bears down on Pietro and especially Bruno, the movie skitters away from messy, unpleasant particulars, which makes its painful passages easier to take but also blunts its impact. Both death and taxes take a heavy toll on the characters, exacting a cost that will make you weep even as the filmmakers smooth out the rough edges, crank the soulful tunes and turn their limpid gaze on a world that, alas, isn’t as beautiful as they seem to want it to be.

The Eight Mountains (

Strangely, The Eight Mountains is the second film this year from Ghent-based directors, after Lukas Dhont’s Close, to feature a thicker-than-thieves young male friendship. “The resemblance is crazy,” says Vandermeersch, “even though our story moves over 30 years. Our boys also play with each other in a way that’s still innocent.” But it was actually the two directors, who are married with a young son, who were brought closer together by the film.

Like Robin Williams in the Woody Allen film, blurred outside of the cameras even when he goes home, I feel a flush of existential humiliation creeping up. I spoke with Van Groeningen and Vandermeersch shortly before The Eight Mountains opened theatrically in the United States. Our conversation covered where they divided duties on the set of the film, how they translated Coginetti’s novel into cinematic terms, their approach to music, and what the film means for them both personally and professionally. That being said, there’s no getting around what even the least judgmental observer would wonder about, especially at a time when Communism is fomenting a new, appearance-driven severity.

In an interview with the directors, Van Groeningen said they were very moved by the characters in the book, which he called “a simple story, an epic really, set against a beautiful backdrop” that spoke to him directly, with elements “That were very very personal to me,” he said. Designed for a young family with ties to New York, this whole home design is just what the clients had in mind—modern but warm and functional for their daily life with two young children.
